Exploring the Mediterranean Wonders: Virgin Cruises to France and Spain
The allure of cruising lies in the promise of a seamless blend of luxury, adventure, and exploration. Among the cruise industry’s titans, Virgin Voyages, founded by Sir Richard Branson, has risen to prominence as a symbol of innovation and chic experiences. Setting sail on a Virgin Cruise to France and Spain offers travelers an extraordinary opportunity to explore the rich cultural tapestries, breathtaking landscapes, and sumptuous cuisine of these two European gems.
Exploring France: A Gastronomic and Artistic Delight
The cruise’s first destination, France, is a country renowned for its gastronomy and art. The Virgin Cruise itinerary often includes stops in cities like Marseille, Nice, and Bordeaux. Travelers can savor exquisite French wines, indulge in delicious pastries, and immerse themselves in the country’s artistic heritage by visiting world-class museums such as the Louvre in Paris. We went to Marseille and Ajacci.
Continuing the journey, the Virgin Cruise to Spain is a captivating exploration of vibrant culture and rich history. Stops in Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza allow passengers to dive into Spain’s diverse offerings.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is an architectural masterpiece. The city boasts the iconic Sagrada Família, designed by the legendary Antoni Gaudí, and the enchanting Park Güell. Passengers can explore the bustling La Rambla, known for its street performers and vibrant atmosphere, and savor tapas at local eateries. I ate at local spots and made a point of finding cute little mom and pop cafes. The food was 80% good. I am not a huge seafood lover, if you are, it would be a 90%. The food was very fresh! I just had to adapt my poor little American taste buds.
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands, is a Mediterranean gem that captivates visitors with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Mallorca, this enchanting city boasts a rich heritage dating back to Roman times, evidenced by its impressive Gothic cathedral, La Seu, a towering masterpiece of architecture. The city’s historic old town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and charming squares, exudes a timeless charm. Palma also offers modern amenities, vibrant markets, and a lively culinary scene, making it a perfect destination for both history enthusiasts and sunseekers, who can bask in the island’s radiant Mediterranean sunshine on its beautiful beaches. Palma de Mallorca is a place where the past and present harmoniously coexist, offering a memorable experience for all who visit.
The island of Ibiza offers a change of pace, known for its legendary nightlife. However, beyond the party scene, Ibiza has serene beaches, picturesque villages, and stunning landscapes that provide a quieter escape for those seeking relaxation. This is where I spent my birthday at Hi Ibiza night club. I went solo, which I do not recommend, but I had fun and made a few dance friends while there.
Marseille, France’s vibrant Mediterranean port city, is a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary allure. With a storied history stretching back over 2,600 years, it’s one of Europe’s oldest cities, where past and present coalesce seamlessly. Marseille’s historic Vieux-Port (Old Port) exudes timeless character, lined with bustling markets, seafood restaurants, and vibrant street life. The iconic Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde overlooks the city, offering panoramic views of the azure coastline. As France’s second-largest city, Marseille is a melting pot of cultures, reflected in its diverse neighborhoods and cuisine. It’s a gateway to the stunning Calanques, a series of fjord-like coves, and a hub for art, music, and Mediterranean joie de vivre. Marseille is a city that thrives on its contrasts, where the past and present converge to create an unforgettable French experience. I walked all over the nearby streets and did a tour of a winery and several parks. It is France’s second largest city so a day in port did not do it justice. I think I would need a week in spring time to enjoy it fully. The food and people were to my liking, friendly and hospitable, even off the beaten tourist track.
Because of a storm we did not go to Cannes. (Booooo!) Safety first, so instead we went to Ajaccio. Ajaccio, nestled on the southwestern coast of Corsica, France, is a Mediterranean jewel that leaves an indelible impression. This historic city, known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, boasts a rich heritage, evident in its elegant architecture, vibrant markets, and captivating museums. Stroll along the palm-lined waterfront, taking in the azure vistas of the Mediterranean Sea. Explore the Maison Bonaparte, Napoleon’s childhood home, and delve into the city’s Corsican culture at the Fesch Museum. Ajaccio’s cuisine, influenced by French and Italian traditions, beckons food enthusiasts with delectable seafood and local delicacies. With its blend of history, natural beauty, and gastronomy, Ajaccio is a captivating destination that offers a taste of Mediterranean charm.

Oh yeah… and the food on the boat is awesome – at the restaurants. Room service food was very disappointing, sometimes cold, sometimes undercooked, lacking condiments… so I just made sure I had a big stash of soda and got up and had a hot fresh pizza and took it back to my room.
I will give the voyage a 80 out of 100. I will be back!
Still on my weight loss journey, but it is a blessing to have less pain and be able to go and do stuff!
